WASHINGTON -- Toyota said Thursday it was recalling 2.3 million vehicles to fix accelerator pedals that could fail to spring back, raising the total number of Toyota models called back for possible uncontrolled acceleration to 4.8 million.

Toyota has instructed dealers to replace accelerator pedals if customers are not satisfied with the way dealers have repaired their pedals under a January recall. The news came as Toyota shares rose to $82.35 Tuesday, their highest price since Jan. 26 when the company stopped sales of eight models covered by the pedal recall.

Toyota is telling owners of 3.8 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles, to remove driver's side floor mats that can stick under accelerator pedals.
