TOKYO -- Nissan reported a 26.6% jump in third-quarter profit Friday and maintained full-year forecasts, with strong sales appearing to quell concerns about a U.S. slowdown and a strong yen. Profit at Nissan Motor Co. rose to 132 billion yen ($1.24 billion) for the fiscal third quarter, from 104 billion yen the same period the previous year.

Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. said today its profit increased 7.4% percent last year but said expects profits will drop 29.5% this year as it battles the rising value of the yen, increasing oil and raw material costs and slower sales in the United States.

Nissan Motor Co. today reported U.S. sales of 84,947 units in October, up 13% from a year earlier.

Nissan Motor Co.'s net income plunged 38.8% during its second fiscal quarter due to falling sales in the United States as well as the impact of currency and raw material costs, forcing the company to cut its full-year profit outlook in half.

Michigan suppliers TRW Automotive Holdings Corp. and BorgWarner Inc. reported higher profits between April and June, as both companies grew sales overseas. Sales outside the United States were pivotal for several suppliers that managed to eke out a profit in the second quarter of a year in which U.S. light-vehicle sales are expected to be the worst in a decade or more.
