UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Wednesday that he is hopeful the UAW can reverse its declining membership as the economy recovers and the nation's labor laws are changed. Gettelfinger said industry sales are off to a good start in April and he believes that Ford, General Motors and Chrysler and the industry at large are on a path to recovery.

WASHINGTON -- United Auto Workers president Ron Gettelfinger suggested today that a mid-February deadline for General Motors and Chrysler to complete their restructuring plans may be "almost unattainable."

UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Wednesday he expects discussions about union concessions with General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC will result in a plan by the Feb. 17th deadline set by Congress.

The UAW is working with Chrysler LLC to sweeten buyout packages being offered to union members to leave the company, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Thursday. The union already won enhanced buyout packages at General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. "It seems to me like we may be in a position at Chrysler to up the ante," he said.
