Global Insight Chief Economist Nariman Behravesh this morning said the risks of a recession in the United States are real and potentially damaging to the automotive market going forward.

Historians are likely to pick July's peak oil prices as the force that pushed the U.S. economy into a recession that began with September's financial crisis, Mike DiGiovanni, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis, and economist said Wednesday.

Consumer spending was stagnant in April while incomes posted a tiny advance, signs that the economic recovery could slow. The flat spending level was the weakest showing in seven months, according to the Commerce Department report.

This is the first time in the last 35 years where there is a global synchronous recovery under way," Ford chief economist Ellen Hughes-Cromwick said Tuesday. "The financial crisis has subsided," she added.

SAN FRANCISCO -- The next five months or so will be difficult ones for U.S. auto dealers, with sales expected to slump, but the chief economist for the National Automobile Dealers Association expects a bit of a rebound in the second half of the year.
